What a Mainframe MVS/z-OS System Administrator Actually Does
A z-OS (also called MVS) system administrator manages the core operating system and infrastructure of IBM mainframe computers. You monitor system health, allocate storage, apply security updates, troubleshoot outages, and ensure batch jobs and CICS transactions run without interruption. - Document and communicate changes. Every change logs into a change control system. You write run books, update runbooks when procedures change, and document why production is down when it goes down.
Skills You Actually Need
Technical skills: z/OS command-line proficiency (TSO/ISPF), JCL (Job Control Language) reading and basic writing, RACF/ACF2 administration, performance monitoring tools (RMF), storage management, and basic networking. You don't need to write COBOL or Assembler—that's for developers—but you need to understand what's crashing.
Soft skills: On-call tolerance (your phone rings at odd hours). Patience with legacy systems that behave unpredictably. Ability to explain problems to non-technical stakeholders without condescension. Written communication (you'll write incident summaries constantly).
